The challenge is that there is significantly less time and energy left after 9-5 PM to pursue your entrepreneurial dream.
According to a recent survey by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), the unemployment rate in India stood at 7.8% in February 2024, highlighting the need for alternative income sources - https://m.thewire.in/article/economy/indias-job-market-a-statistical-conundrum-with-underlying-concerns
The work has been pressure some and tedious. Every day you go to work, you feel as if you are firefighting.
A new fire breaks in the office every day, and you are firefighting and extinguishing that. The analogy here means that at work every day, a big job is taking your mental peace and all abilities.
You are so engrossed in the work in the office that your mental faculties are used a lot. When you are in the office, very few moments remind you of pursuing your passion or entrepreneurial dream.
During my 100% time at the University, things of entrepreneurial venture/side income struck me every day only after 3:30 PM during the day. Initially, starting at 9:30 Am, it was all about taking lectures and going to rooms.
At times, I gave 3–4 lectures; at other times, there were some adjustments. All in all, I was super busy until 3:30 PM. Teaching a topic/subject to students takes a lot of mental energy, as working with students requires efforts to make the subject/topic interesting and to get their interest.
I had to keep students in the gaming mode, which meant keeping them hooked and engaged so that they had no time to talk to each other. All in all, mentally, physically, and emotionally, I was drained of energy.
Beyond teaching students, some administrative / office responsibilities would take up much of the time. Coming home after leaving University at 5 Pm was drained and emotionally sucked Ashish.
Is this the case with you? It is being said that there is residual stress also that you bring home.
Even after reaching home, you are either still in the office mentally thinking about what to plan for tomorrow, or you may still be thinking about what is to be addressed today for the office that you could not address in the office.
For me, the next day’s lectures / pending admin assignments needed to be handled. Considering another 2 hours to settle down your energy and work emotionally and mentally, you are back in your world by 8 P.m., but you are not as fresh as you were when you woke up at 6 a.m. At 8 PM, you try to reach your computer where you have planned to do something:
From 8 to 9 PM, you look for ideas/inspiration; somehow, you need to know when you got into binge-watching reels/shorts. By 9 PM, you realize that the one hour of work you allotted for yourself could have been more productive.
You are back in the same loop. It is time for dinner; by the time you finish, it will be 9:30 PM.
This is the most challenging and disheartening time, as you must now wait another day to return to your entrepreneurial interest/passion/hobby/desire.
Your family is waiting for you, and your kids are waiting for you. Internally, you are again shattered and unable to be productive. Ideally, it is not about you.
It is not your productivity/ability / your focus. It was about the mental faculties that were available for you to create content. Creating content = be it writing/be it video graphing, is a creative game.
To play the game, you have to be in the game when you are fresh. When your creative faculties and mental and physical abilities are 100 percent and at peak,
Ratan Tata, the renowned Indian industrialist, once said, "I don't believe in making the right decisions. I make decisions and then make them right."
The solution is to work in your mornings. The key to success lies in leveraging your mornings. As the famous Indian author and leadership expert Robin Sharma writes in his book "The 5 AM Club," "Own your morning. Elevate your life." Start taking time out to build your entrepreneurial venture in the mornings.
You work from 9 to 6 PM. Change the game to 6 to 9 AM. 6 to 9 AM might not be possible for you. Can you work from 6 to 8 AM?
Can you work from 5 to 7 AM? Ideally, time doesn’t matter. What matters is your focus, consistency, creative mental faculties, and energy.
Devote 2 hours every day in the morning, and you will be up and live with your entrepreneurial dream. The process is:
Everything boils down to one thing only. Do the same tedious work daily and consistently. Consistency is crucial in building an online business.
As Bhavish Aggarwal, co-founder of Ola Cabs, aptly puts it, "The challenge we face is in talent—it takes bandwidth and time to get talent and build a team." The same principle applies to building your own business – it takes time and consistent effort.
Becoming a weekend warrior can solve some problems but will only solve some problems. Your thought pattern is broken even if you try to devote 8–10 hours on weekends. What should I create on a Saturday / Sunday?
This happens when you are not in the creative zone. I recommend training your creative faculties every day. Your output will not be the same every day, but you will create something each day. Relate it to going to work every day—because of going to work every day, you are paid at the end of the month.
What if you don't work every day? Will you be paid in full at the end of the month? You might have heard of writers writing books in 7 days when that creative zone struck.
Ideally, writers, artists, and creators are in the zone 24 × 7. They receive the ideas' natural flow/download at a particular time. I recommend training your creative muscles every day for 2 hours to get into that zone.
By doing this, you will be doing your creative information one day. In Indian culture, 'nishkam karma' or selfless action is highly valued. This principle aligns perfectly with the journey of building a side business. By consistently working on your venture without immediate expectations of success, you lay the foundation for future prosperity.
